What to know about moving a business in Toronto

Downtown Toronto is a city of office towers, many of them linked by the PATH walkway underground. Freight in these buildings goes through shared loading docks, often below street level, with height limits that a full-size moving truck may not clear. We check dock clearance at both buildings and size the trucks to fit.

Outside the core, moves in North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough and the 905 region are usually easier on access but longer on travel. Highway 401 traffic shapes the schedule, so crews load early in the evening or start at dawn on weekends.

Toronto and the GTA: facts that affect a move

  • Population of Toronto: 2,794,356 (2021 Census). Source
  • Parking on Toronto streets is governed by Municipal Code Chapter 950. A moving truck still has to follow posted parking rules unless a permit says otherwise. Source
  • If a truck or equipment will occupy part of the road allowance, such as a lane, boulevard or sidewalk, the City requires a Street Occupation Permit. Source

Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the city and both buildings before the move.

Most downtown towers book freight elevators and loading docks in fixed slots, often in the evening or on weekends. Book both buildings before you fix the move date.
